Dongo is the place where Benito Mussolini and the leaders of the Italian Social Republic were captured and taken to the municipal headquarters, Palazzo Manzi, to make their arrest official. Only a few days earlier, the Sala d'Oro, the hall of honour in Palazzo Manzi, had been used as a funeral chamber for the local fallen partisans. Hence, the Palace has been the scene of memorable historical events and is now the setting for a museum which recalls these events.
And so the pioneering End of War Museum was opened in Dongo. This is a virtual and interactive journey through the twists and turns of one of the most controversial chapters in Italian history. Through exhibits, documents and testimonies, unpublished films and engaging reconstructions, the exhibition invites the public to become the main character in the story. Modern multimedia technology catapults the viewer into the tragic struggle pitting Italians against Italians, which characterised the Resistance war on Lake Como as well as throughout Italy. Visitors can now experience first-hand the capture and execution of Mussolini and his subordinates, the dramatic epilogue of the twenty-year fascist period.
